Up Breathing: A Technique Worth Practising Before Labour

There is one breathing technique that comes up again and again in hypnobirthing, midwifery, and anxiety research. It is simple enough to learn in a minute and powerful enough to change how your nervous system responds to stress. It is called up breathing.
What it is
Inhale slowly through your nose for four counts. Exhale gently through your mouth for eight counts. That is one cycle. Repeat four times.
The extended exhale is the key. When your out-breath is longer than your in-breath, your nervous system receives a clear signal: you are safe. Adrenalin production slows. Your heart rate drops. Your muscles release tension. This is not a trick; it is a well-understood physiological response.
How to practise
Sit comfortably with one hand on your belly. Breathe in through your nose to a slow count of four, feeling your belly rise. Then breathe out through your mouth to a slow count of eight, letting your whole body soften.
Do four cycles. That takes about a minute.
Practise once or twice a day during pregnancy. You do not need a special environment or a lot of time. The goal is to make this pattern so familiar that your body finds it automatically when you need it most.
During labour
A contraction in early labour typically lasts around 60 seconds. Four cycles of up breathing fits well within that window. As a contraction begins, start your first inhale. By the time you reach the end of the fourth exhale, the contraction will be fading.
This is why it helps to practise now. In the intensity of labour, you will not be reading instructions. You will reach for what feels familiar.
Beyond birth
Up breathing is not only for labour. The same four-in, eight-out pattern works during a stressful scan, a sleepless night, or any moment in pregnancy when anxiety edges in. You are training a skill you will use throughout the whole journey.
